What is in store for 2016? We all have high hopes! Our 2015 season here at the Norwegian Flyfishers Club has come and gone, and ended up as a major improvement over the last few years. Our total catches increased dramatically compared to the past two seasons and we are proud to say that our catch and release quote was more than 95%!

The total catch of the Gaula in season 2015 has been registered with approximately 25 tons of salmon, which is a great improvement compared to the previous two seasons (14 to 16 tons). The average weight of Gaula salmon in 2015 was 5,6 kg. A strong average size- as we experienced a strong run of medium-sized fish this year.

A perfect June-salmon

A perfect June-salmon, caught by Justin Miller (of The Fly Shop, Redding, CA).

The 2015 salmon-fishing season on the Gaula started off quite slowly, due to a cold spring in Mid-Norway and a late salmon migration along the coast. From mid June until early August the weather was predominantly cold and rainy, which was good for the fishing which was reflected in our catch statistics during that period. From mid-August we experienced a very warm and dry period with low and warm water. When the river level dropped to what we would refer to as “deadly” low we had some days with very tough conditions. But this quickly turned around with some rain, and the fish began to cooperate again. Through the last days of the season the weather changed back again to cooler and rainier conditions, so we were able to end the season on a fishier note!

Overall, both the NFC and the Gaula experienced a good 2015 fishing season. Especially 2-Sea winter, or medium sized salmon (4 to 7kg) ran the river in very good numbers. Also the scientific research-bag-net caught and released a lot of medium sized fish during season 2015, so we knew that this summer was supposed to be good one for fish of that size.  With such a strong run of 2 sea winter salmon this past year, we can expect that for the 2016 season a run of very large fish (3 sea winter fish) in good numbers weighing 8-15 kg (or hopefully even bigger!!) should be filling the Gaula from June 1st!

We are glad that many of our regulars have been re-booking again for the coming summer – and as well many new faces have been securing their rods already for 2016, so that some weeks at our Lodge are already fully booked! Please get in touch with us a soon as possible if you are interested to fish with us in 2016! We still have rods available in the early season (which might be very interesting due to the expected run of big fish and the fact that we added some new water on the lower river and near the lodge– more information will follow soon), also a few rods in prime time and as well in the later season, when fishing can be really good if the conditions are right!

We are looking forward to another great season in 2016 and hopefully we will see many of you on the Gaula during the summer 2016!

Sincerely,

Your team at the Norwegian Flyfishers Club
